AI Automation for Ecommerce · Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce
Ecommerce AI automation that does the boring work, with a person checking anything a customer sees.
1Dot Digital builds AI automation for Shopify, BigCommerce and WooCommerce stores: support replies, product content, recommendations, demand forecasting and back-office admin, connected to your live order and catalog data and reviewed by your team before anything risky goes out.
This isn’t a chatbot widget bolted on top. Each workflow reads your orders, catalog and policies through the platform’s APIs, drafts an answer or an action, scores its own confidence, and hands anything uncertain to a person with the sources it used.
Typical first project: one workflow, running in about a month, measured against the hours or revenue it was meant to move.
Honest framing
What AI is good at in a store — and what it isn’t
Most “AI for ecommerce” pitches promise a robot that runs your business. That’s not how it works. AI is very good at high-volume, repetitive, text-and-data work where the rules are mostly known. It is bad at judgment calls, brand-defining decisions and anything where a wrong answer costs you a customer. So we automate the first kind and put a person in front of the second.
Automate
- Order status, tracking and delivery questions
- Product descriptions, specs and alt text at catalog scale
- Recommendations and bundles from real purchase data
- Tagging, categorizing and cleaning product data
- Review summaries and sentiment flags
- Reorder-point and demand forecasting
Keep a human on
- Refund and policy exceptions
- Angry or at-risk customers
- Anything that names a price, promise or deadline
- Brand voice on hero pages and campaigns
- Supplier and wholesale negotiations
- Final say on what goes live
Use cases
Eight things we automate most often
Customer support agent
Answers “where is my order”, sizing, stock and policy questions from live order and catalog data. Escalates anything it isn’t sure about, with a draft and the sources it used.
Product content engine
Descriptions, bullet specs, meta titles and alt text generated from supplier data, then batch-reviewed before publishing.
Personalized recommendations
“Goes with”, “customers like you” and bundle suggestions built on your own order history, not a generic widget’s guesses.
Search & merchandising
Semantic search that understands “warm winter duvet for a hot sleeper”, plus auto-suggested collection ordering by margin and stock.
Demand forecasting
Reorder points and peak-season buys from sales velocity, lead times and seasonality — with the reasoning shown, so your buyer can override it.
Returns & exchanges
Pre-approve straightforward returns against policy, generate labels, suggest an exchange first. Edge cases go to a person.
Reviews & feedback
Summarize thousands of reviews into what’s actually wrong with a product, draft replies, and flag listings that need a fix.
Email & ad copy drafts
First drafts for flows, campaigns and product ads from your catalog and past winners. Your marketer edits, approves and sends.
How it's wired
Store data in, reviewed action out
Your store data
Orders, catalog, inventory, customers, policies, help docs, 3PL and ERP — read through the platform’s own APIs.
Your policies & voice
Returns, shipping, tone of voice and a list of things the system must never say.
The AI layer
Reads the question, looks up the facts, drafts an answer or an action, and scores its own confidence.
Human in the loop
High-confidence, low-risk items go out. Everything else lands in a queue with the draft and its sources.
Customer or catalog
Reply sent, product published, order updated — and logged so you can audit any decision later.
We choose the model provider to fit the job and your data policy, and we confirm each provider’s data-use terms before your data touches it.
What it replaces
Where the hours and the money actually go
| Task | Today | With automation | What we measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Order status tickets | An agent opens several tabs and replies by hand | Answered instantly from tracking data; the agent sees only exceptions | Tickets per agent per day, first-response time |
| Writing product pages | Written one SKU at a time; the backlog grows with every drop | Drafted automatically and reviewed in batches | SKUs published per week |
| Recommendations | Manually curated “related products”, rarely updated | Rebuilt nightly from real order pairs | Attach rate, AOV |
| Reordering stock | Spreadsheet, gut feel, Q4 stock-outs | Suggested POs with reasoning; the buyer approves | Stock-out days, overstock value |
| Reading reviews | Nobody has time | Weekly digest: top 5 issues per product line | Return rate on flagged SKUs |
Illustrative examples. We measure your own baseline in the automation review.
Where to start
Three starting points, each a finished thing
Support agent
Connect your help desk, orders and 3PL. Auto-answer routine status, stock and sizing questions. A human queue handles the rest.
- First workflow live in about a month
- Works with your help desk or email; supported tools confirmed in the review
- Weekly accuracy review for the first month
Catalog content engine
Supplier feed or spreadsheet in, reviewed product pages out — descriptions, specs, SEO fields, alt text — in your voice, at your pace.
- Voice guide built from your best pages
- Batch review UI for your team
- Publishes via the platform API
Merchandising & forecasting
Recommendations, collection ordering and reorder suggestions from your order history, delivered as decisions your team approves.
- Rebuilt nightly from live data
- Explanations on every suggestion
- Dashboards for buyers and merchandisers
Guardrails
The rules we don't bend
Automation that embarrasses you in front of a customer is worse than no automation. These are non-negotiable in every build.
Process
From review to running in about a month
Automation review
Half a day with your team: where the hours go, what data exists, what must stay human.
Pick one workflow
The one with the clearest payback. Define the metric before we build.
Build & shadow
Runs alongside your team for 1–2 weeks; every output reviewed, nothing sent.
Go live, measured
Confidence thresholds set from shadow data. Weekly accuracy report for the first month.
Expand
Second workflow only once the first is boring.
FAQ
Questions store owners actually ask
Will customers know they’re talking to AI?
Yes, if you want them to — we recommend it. Most people don’t mind fast, correct answers about their order; they mind being stuck with a bot that can’t help. A human is always one message away.
What if it gets something wrong?
It will, occasionally, which is why we start in shadow mode and set confidence thresholds from real data. Low-confidence or high-risk items never go out unreviewed, and every sent message is logged with its sources.
Do we need to be on Shopify Plus or a big platform?
No. Standard Shopify, BigCommerce and WooCommerce all expose the order and catalog APIs we need. Volusion is possible with a lighter integration.
How is this priced?
A fixed price per workflow, then a monthly fee that covers model usage, monitoring and improvements. No per-ticket surprises. Figures are quoted after the review.
Can it use our tone of voice?
That’s the point. We build a voice guide from your best-performing pages and replies, and your team edits the drafts until it sounds right before anything is automated.
Which AI provider do you use?
Whichever fits the job and your data policy. You’re not locked in to a provider, and we’ll tell you which one we recommend and why.
How is this different from a chatbot or from rules-based automation?
A chatbot widget answers from a script or a generic knowledge base. Rules-based automation does exactly what it’s told when a trigger fires, nothing more. Our workflows combine the two: rules and approvals you define, plus a language model that reads your live order and catalog data, drafts the response and flags uncertainty. The model handles the variable text; your rules and your team decide what’s allowed.
What data can the AI see, and who has access?
Only what each workflow needs, through scoped API access. Every sent message and action is logged with its sources, so you can audit any decision later.
Can it issue refunds or change prices on its own?
No. Refund and policy exceptions, anything that names a price, promise or deadline, and the final say on what goes live stay with your team.
Not sure where AI would pay off in your store?
Book a half-day automation review. You'll leave with a ranked list of workflows and what each would save — whether or not we build it.
